31st January 2011:

Great weekend for riders of Melita Cycling Club with various victories & podium finishes.

The first race, the National Duathlon Championships, was held on Saturday afternoon by the Malta Triathlon Association at the Coast Road. Here Patrick Scicluna did an outstanding time trial to register the best bike segment (30kms in 43 mins 44 secs). Maurice Formosa was a few seconds slower to claim the 2nd best bike segment while Mark Bonnici managed the third best time although suffering a mechanical mishap. These performances landed Patrick and Maurice a 1 & 2 placing in the Relay-Team competition.

In the Ladies category Marica Micallef did a superb race to finish 1st on the line. However an
unjustified penalty of 2 minutes was given to drop her to 2nd place.

On Sunday cross country racing resumed at Mizieb with the best mountain bikers on the start line. The pace was frantic from the beginning with Clive Ebejer & Mark Bonnici attacking the group several times. Only Clive Ebejer, Mark Bonnici & Maurice Formosa from Melita and Etienne Bonello from Greens managed to stay in front. Unfortunately Formosa’s effort on Saturday made it's toll and thus he couldn’t keep with the front runners. The trio of Bonello, Ebejer & Bonnici continued to ride together until Bonello suffered a puncture. Ebejer & Bonnici eventually joint forces to finish 1st and 2nd respectively with Clive Ebejer now sharing the National Points Series lead with Etienne Bonello.

Racing continues next Sunday with the first race from the road racing calendar with the Individual Time Trial at Qormi.

Formosa dominates Penellu Road Race

Maurice Formosa of Melita Pedal Power Cycling Club claimed his second consecutive win in the Road National Championships last Sunday to prove his outstanding form this season.

The race was impeccably organized by the Malta Cycling Federation at the gruelling and hilly Penellu/Mellieha By-pass circuit where the Elite riders had to tackle the tough 6km circuit seven times which includes the tough Penellu hill.

In the Elite Category, Adrian Sciberras (Mosta A.F. Sign Studio C.C.) attacked the main group right from the start, however he was reeled in straight away by Mark Bonnici (Melita Cycling Club C.C.) Riders from Melita Pedal Power C.C. took over the lead of the peloton with Clive Ebejer maintaining a strong pace at the front. However it was Maurice Formosa who made the selection in the front group when he set a very strong pace right at the start of the first hill. Only David Galea (Qormi Scott C.C.), Christian Formosa (Melita Pedal Power C.C.) and Steve Sciberass (Mosta A.F. Sign Studio C.C.) managed to follow him. The four at the front continued to cycle together until Steve Sciberras and David Galea where eventually dropped.

The Formosa brothers set a strong pace on the front creating a sizeable gap on a chasing trio formed by David Galea and Mark Zammit of Qormi Scott C.C. and Etienne Bonello of Greens C.C. However in the final two laps of the race Christian Formosa could not match the pace set by his brother and eventually Maurice Formosa won the race in 1 hour and 21 minutes. Christian Formosa kept riding at his own pace with a great possibility to claim the second spot, however a nasty crash in the closing kilometres lost all his chances. Meanwhile David Galea sprinted for 2 place in 1.24:34 while team mate Mark Zammit settled for 3 in 1.24.35

The overall standings in the Elite Category after two races and with one race to go next Sunday, stand as follows:
Maurice Formosa (Melita Pedal Power C.C.) – 400 points
David Galea (Qormi Scott C.C.) – 305 points
Mark Bonnici (Meltia Pedal Power C.C.) – 295 points

Next and final race valid for the Road National Championships will be held next Sunday, 30th May 2010 at the Coast Road/ Bahar ic Caghaq.

San Martin Circuit Road Race (National Championships): 1 - 2 finish for Melita Duo

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Melita Cycling Club duo top the podium in the first National Championships round.

Great team work by Melita cycling club landed the team the top spots in the Elite Category in the first race valid for the Road National Championships organized by the Malta Cycling Federation.

The race was held at the grueling and hilly San Martin/Ghajn Tuffieha circuit where the Elite riders had to tackle the 10 kilometer circuit, finishing with a 2km uphill, for 7 times.

In the Elite Category, Mark Bonnici (Melita Pedal Power C.C.) attacked the main group right from the start. He was joined by Adrian Sciberras (Mosta A.F. Sign Studio C.C.) forming a two-man breakaway. After a series of attacks from riders of Greens C.C. and Qormi Scott C.C. in the main group, the duo was almost reeled in the 3 lap, however excellent team tactics from Melita helped the breakaway stay away.

Bonnici and Sciberras eventually managed to increase their lead almost to 2 minutes however the wind and fatigue started to take the toll on the two riders and the gap was reduced to less than a minute in the final lap. The duo started climbing the last hill up to the finish with a 300 meter advantage on the chasing group which was reduced to only 9 riders from the initial 30 riders. Christian Formosa (Melita Pedal Power C.C.) attacked the chasing group and managed to catch up with the duo half way trough the hill. In the final 100 meters Bonnici sprinted for the line and managed to open a gap on Sciberras and Formosa, however an explosive attack from Maurice Formosa from the chasing group meant that Bonnici had to settle for second with a fantastic 1-2 finish for Melita Cycling Club in a time of 1hr 50 minutes and 15 secs. Adrian Sciberras had to settle for a much deserved 3rd place.

Next race valid for the Road National Championships will be held at the Penellu/Mellieha circuit on the 23 of May.

In the meantime, cyclists will be busy next week, Sunday 25 April, with the first round of the Time Trial National Championships which will be held at Mriehel bypass.
